I’ve just been asked by a friend of mine who is expecting to tell her one thing I bought and was a waste of money and one thing I couldn’t be without…
Well I honestly couldn’t think of only one thing and therefore I have decided to do a blog post about all the different things and plus with a couple of my friends expecting and I’m asked this question again, I thought I’d write it all down for them.
So lets start with the things I couldn’t be without…
1: The sleepyhead
This time around I was very kindly leant a Sleepyhead. These weren’t really around when Betsie was little so we didn’t know any different but for Bodie this is definitely something we couldn’t be without. He sleeps amazingly in it at night time, its very easy to move around whilst he sleeps, it fits in his sliver cross and so on…We’ve really loved it and so has he!
2: An Expresser
First time around – An expresser. During your pregnancy you might have great ideas about breastfeeding…I did and unfortunately sometimes things just don’t go as smoothly as you think they will. This was therefore my absolute saviour. I was determined that Betsie would only ever have breastmilk so I sat and expressed every feed for her as she couldn’t latch due to nipple issues. If I didn’t have it, who knows what I would have done….
3: Nipple Shields
I would also say have a pair of nipple shields to hand. I loved my Medela ones, but make sure you get the right size for you and look at the instructions in how to put them on. I have used these for both babies. For Betsie it was due to latching issues, for Bodie it was purely because I didn’t want sore, cracked, bleeding nipples and I could tell that his latch wasn’t good enough at the start of it all for him to continue feeding without that happening. I wore them for 3 weeks, making sure at least a couple of times a week/a couple of feeds he would at least try and feed without them. It worked brilliantly and my little monkey hardly lost any weight and has gained amazingly. He now feeds every feed confidently without them.
4: A travel system
Something you can’t really go wrong with and something that most people buy anyway now. Clipping the car seat in and out the car and onto the pram is literally the best thing ever.
5: Plenty of vests, onesies, bibs and muslins
It really is kind of ridiculous how much your wash load will increase. I must go through at least a muslin if not two a day, about four bibs and on a bad day two to three outfits! Make sure you’ve got plenty stocked so you’re not constantly trying to get them through the wash.
I’m sure there’s lots more I couldn’t be without if you were to take those things off me…I can imagine I’d quickly want them back. But these things spring to my mind and might be something you don’t think too much about.
Something I wish I’d not bought…
This is a tricky one, but it’s probably going to be clothes. You get given so so many, especially if its your first. I guess some of my favourite outfits are the ones I bought, and actually if I hadn’t bought a few bits we’d of been stuck for first size items as everyone seems to buy bigger these days and you don’t get any newborn bits! ha But people also tend to give you gift receipts and if your like us getting double of things its rather handy to be able to go and swap things for something you need for then or get the bigger/smaller size. So you really don’t need to buy much for the start!
